| The Wing Institute Knowledge Network | | |
The Wing Institute has launched a knowledge network to accelerate communication, collaboration, and cooperation across a wide range of individuals, organizations, professional disciplines, and regions in the promotion of evidence-based education. The goal of the Wing Institute Knowledge Network is to accumulate and disseminate existing knowledge, create new knowledge, and facilitate the effective application of that knowledge to real world settings in the area of evidence-based education.
Why the knowledge network?
The need for increased use of evidence in education decision-making has never been greater. As schools face continuing performance challenges, inadequate resources, and increased federal and state accountability, there is much greater emphasis on making the best possible decisions with the best possible information. This focus is reflected in recent federal laws—No Child Left Behind and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act—which contain numerous references to using “scientifically-based research” in decision-making and “research based” programs.
For an evidence-based education model to have impact, there must be adequate research (quantity and quality), effective dissemination, systematic implementation, and accurate monitoring. A good model for such a system is in health care, which has an intensive system for researching and approving medical interventions. A formal system for evidence-based health care has been in place for many years. Unfortunately, there is no comparable system in place for education. There is simply too little research, no systematic dissemination, and a lack of coordination across existing resources. The Wing Institute Knowledge Network has been designed to help close this gap by providing a structure and resources that act as a catalyst to increasing communication, cooperation, and collaboration among individuals currently engaged in evidence-based research and practice. Its goal is to promote “real-time” evidence-based education using existing knowledge, resources and systems while accelerating the acquisition of new knowledge, resources, and systems.
